Subject: Final Champs Results - STGC 2008

Georgians,

In my second to last update before Champs dated March 4, I stated that if we achieved our objectives we would place between 7th and 10th at this year's renewal of Champs and that would mean that we would be about where we projected to be in this the third year of our five year plan.

We placed 9th at Champs this year which suggests that the management team has a good idea about what this team is capable of and that our projections are realistic. For this we are particularly proud and extremely grateful to those who have believed in our plans and without whose support to date these said plans would only have been pipe dreams.

As usual we took our fair share of blows today, but we had an equal number of people who stepped up and performed over and above expectations to ensure we achieved our goals despite these blows.

Chief among those people who stepped up today was Class II discus thrower Jason Harris who improved his personal best twice today by over two meters to score valuable points for us when we needed them most and which provided the margin of victory that propelled us from 10th to 9th place. Aldane Dunn, performing in his last Champs, gave the school a fitting parting gift when he put on a superb display of jumping to snare valuable points placing 6th in Class I high jump when many had all but written him off. As expected, Kimarki Absalom medalled in the Class II high jump after garnering points in the long jump the day before.

Earlier we got one of our biggest blows when Ahkiel Bowes Savage was injured prior to the start of the Class III 400 meters. It was only through grit and determination that he was able to complete the race so as to secure the school a valuable point. This injury put paid to the hopes of our young Class III relay team made up of Class IV athletes that depended so heavily on Ahkiel's presence ....or so we thought.

Another of our "baby heroes", Stephen Roxborough stepped in at a moment's notice and the team ran bravely to finish 6th and capture 5 crucial points. Our Class I team would also have to overcome a baton change mishap to fight gamely to secure 5th place in the Class I 4x100.

Again we were the victims of the inequalities of Champs when our 2 quartermilers were given lane eight in Class II and III when they went into the finals with 3rd and 4th fastest times. 1st year Class II Jermaine Fyffe battled to 6th in his race despite that, but Ahkiel's injury prevented him from doing likewise. New kid Kendon Guy also secured us a point in the Class II 800.

One of the reasons for the gutsy performance of the guys today was an emotionally charged and uplifting talk the team had this morning with Ryan Peralto Jnr. of St.G.C's team of the mid 70's. who took time out to visit with the team this morning. The boys really appreciated it and their response spoke volumes for itself. I wish to take this opportunity to say thanks to Yannie.

I must say that this year's placement was truly a team effort. Team effort in the truest sense of the word, from those on the track, those coaching and those selfless individuals who support our team.

Thanks to all for making our 2008 Champs a success, and I promise you.....the best is yet to come.

FLORIDA ALUMNI ADVANCE 1/2 MILLION J$ TO REPAIR HURRICANE DAMAGE TO ST. GEORGE'S
STGCOBAFL President Trevor Palmer presents cheque for J$500,000 to the Principal of St. Geotge's College.
Thank you letter from St. George's

Trevor Palmer (Class of '75), President of the St. George's College Old Boys Association of Florida, travelled to Jamaica in November to present a cheque for J$500,000 to the school's Principal Mrs. Margaret Campbell. This cheque represents the association's contribution towards defraying the costs of repairing the damage caused by Hurricane Dean in August 2007.

Mindful of the urgent need and confident of the goodwill of our supporters, the STGCOBAFL made a huge leap of faith and advanced this contribution. We are now appealing to all our well-wishers to contribute to our Hurricane Damage Repair Fund. Your donations may be made directly through this website by following this link.

We thank all who have already contributed, and look forward to the support of others. Contributions of all sizes will be gratefully accepted.

GEORGIAN IS NASA'S PAYLOAD MISSION MANAGER FOR INTERNATIONAL SPACE CROSSROADS
Alpha Dance Glenn C. Chin
Mission Manager
International Space Station and Spacecraft Processing Directorate
NASA

St. George's College Old Boy Glenn C. Chin is a NASA mission manager at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, a position he has held since July 2000.

Glenn Chin, Harmony payload mission manager

As Mission Manager in charge of a multi-disciplinary team of between 30 and 40 engineers at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), he was given responsibility for 'Harmony', a module which, when finally installed at the International Space Station, will offer six additional docking ports for a consortium of 13 space-travelling nations, mainly from Europe. "It's like a six-entrance hallway that you can add rooms to," said Chin in describing the 31,500-pound, 24-foot long aluminum module recently. "It's actually the gateway to the international partners."

At right, he describes the Harmony module during a media event in the Space Station Processing Facility.

"It's an exhilarating feeling of excitement and we're all anxious to see Harmony get to the pad," said Chin. "I've never been a mission manager for any other mission that was as challenging." But even with all the excitement of the upcoming mission, he added that after working with the module for four years, "we'll definitely miss Harmony."

Retired Air Force Col. Pamela A. Melroy commanded the STS-120 space shuttle mission which delivered the Harmony Node 2 connecting module to the Space Station in October 2007.

AN OPEN INVITATION FROM OUR PRESIDENT

September 17, 2007

Dear Fellow Georgians,

We will be having a meeting on September 22, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Global Choice Mortgage, Inc. office at 7777A Davie Road Extension, Suite 302, Davie, FL 33024
This is a follow-up to the General Meeting of the St. George's College Old Boys Association of Florida that was held on July 14, 2007.

There were several people at the last meeting who expressed interest in participating in the STGCOBAFL, and I would like to strongly encourage your and others' participation. This is a very important meeting which will provide you the opportunity to positively impact our organization's structure and the plans for our future activities.

While the STGCOBAFL has accomplished a lot since its inception under Dennis Barnett's leadership, we have been challenged in moving forward because we have been relying on only a few “committed” members to do all the work. Our ultimate goal is to help our Alma Mater in its various needs; for example, the repair costs for the damage from Hurricane Dean has been estimated to be about $8M Ja.

We need your help to organize and to carry out our various fun and fund-raising events throughout the year; this would be the perfect time to volunteer your service and give back to your Alma Mater.  Please make a special effort to attend this meeting; you can make a difference.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

Best Regards,
Trevor Palmer
President, STGCOBAFL

Subject: St. George's College Old Boys Association Monsignor Gladstone Wilson Award Banquet

This year's function will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Tickets are $4,000 JA.or $58 US each.

We are working hard to make the banquet a successful one. The long election campaign took a toll on our ticket sales and our ability to get anyone's attention. So we are now trying to work overtime to sell tickets.

We are inviting the new PM - Bruce Golding to hand out the awards to Senator Dwight Nelson and Dr. Louis Knight.   Please spread the word.

We need the funds to continue to support the work of the school.

From: Pokar Chandiram - R.I.P. Billy Headman

Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2007

Dear All,
This is to advise you that Billy Headman died peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospital on Sep 2nd.

He had been ailing for quite a while and I was lucky to visit him the day before. He kept his wonderful sense of humor till the end and as you know was a great story teller of his experiences on and off the football field.

St George's College has produced some phenomenal footballers and BIlly was among the best of those that played Manning Cup football for his Alma Mater in the 1940's and later for the Old Boys.

A memorial service is being held tommorow Wednesday the 5th at Sts. Peter and Paul. Cremation follows.

From: Peter Brooks, co-manager of the STGC track team

Dear Friends,
Just a quick note to let you know what's going on.

Three STGC athletes participated in the 2007 National Junior and Senior Championships. They all performed outstandingly. It is interesting to note that unlike many other schools all our athletes have been on very limited training since Champs and Penns as we ensure that academics are first priority during this exam period. As a result the athletes are limited to twice weekly training until exams are over.

Despite this limited training, our ace Class II sprinter Khorey Spaulding ran a personal best 10.80 to place 5th in the Under 18 100m final. Our Class II high jumper, Kimarkey Absalom, jumped a season's best 2.0 meters for silver at the championships and booked himself a spot on the national team to the World Youth Championships in Ostrava. Finally, after shrugging off disappointing performances at Champs and Penns, discus thrower O'Dayne Richards won the event to become the National Under 20 Discus Champion in a new championship record of 53.08 meters. He will be on the National team to the Pan American Games in Brazil.

I know you are as proud as we are of our champions and this augurs well for our team for 2008.
