PHILIP DOES IT AGAIN!

It felt so nice, he did it twice.
Philip Wong (Class of 1959), President of Deltana Enterprises, Inc. of Miami and a member of the St. George's College Alumni Association of Florida, presented a second J$1,000,000 cheque to St. George's at the beginning of the 2006/2007 school year. He is shown here (see enlarged photo) flanked by the college's Principal Mrs. Margaret Campbell and Bursar Mrs. Joylene Parris.
On hand for the presentation were several members of the Florida and Jamaica Alumni Associations, the Consul General for Jamaica to the Southern United States Hon. Ricardo Allicock (also an Old Boy), and representatives of the StGC Board of Management.
Once more, with feeling - "A million thanks, Philip".

STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS, LAPTOPS, INTERNET SERVICE
|
|
|
Founding President Dennis Barnett and donor Philip Wong of the St. George's College Alumni Association of Florida visited Winchester Park in September and interviewed five students and their parents, following their nominations for scholarships by a committee of teachers.
Jezeel Martin and Charles Frost received full scholarships up to completion of their first degree at the University of the West Indies from Philip Wong, who also presented them with laptop computers. Patrick Terrelonge of InfoChannel, (Class of '59), has generously undertaken to provide free Internet services for the two scholarship winners.
The interviewers were so impressed with the standard and deportment of the candidates that the other three students, Tevin Williams, Rojae Powell and Aldin Crosdale, were awarded scholarships for the remaining years of their studies at St. George's. These scholarships will include books, uniforms, meals, transportation and other incidentals. Some of the students will receive dental and medical treatment while in the programme.
Several Old Boys, including Tony Wong, Ken Scott and George Anderson, were instrumental in making these scholarship grants possible.
We salute all of these Old Boys and thank them for their generous and continued support of their alma mater and its students.

Full backing for women doing a 'man's job' - poll
The Gleaner, Tuesday August 15, 2006

Mrs. Margaret Campbell
When school opens in September and Mrs. Margaret Campbell has to deal with the students at all-boy St. George's College in Kingston, she can do so with the assurance that the vast majority of Jamaicans do not believe that her sex is an impediment to the job.
That at least, seems to be the message in an opinion poll in which Jamaicans argue that such an appointment should be based on qualifications rather than gender.
Mrs. Campbell, who previously taught math at the University of the West Indies, Mona, was formally named principal of the state-supported Roman Catholic high school at the start of this month. But when her impending appointment was leaked in June, it ignited complaints from some faculty members and parents who argued it was a man's job, because boys needed a male mentor.
There were also claims that the selection process did not sufficiently accommodate competent males who were interested in the post.
The poll speaks
But according to findings of the survey, conducted for The Gleaner by pollster Bill Johnson, 70 per cent of Jamaicans have no problem with a woman running an all-boy school, more than two-and-half times the 26 per cent who felt that a man should run an all-male high school.
The poll, done in mid-July, when the St. George's issue was still raging, has a margin of error of plus or minus three per cent. Males accounted for 52 per cent of the sample of 1,008.
When it came to whether a qualified man should head a girls school, marginally fewer Jamaicans, 66 per cent, felt that this should be the case. The four percentage points gap between people saying that qualified women should be able to head an all-boy school and vice versa was just outside the poll's margin of error, making the difference statistically insignificant.
Similarly, the 28 per cent who insisted that the head of a girls school should be a woman was statistically insignificant from the 26 per cent who said a male should be in charge of a school for boys.

The website is great, guys. Good to know that the alumni association in Florida is growing.
I need your help here. The graduating class of 1980 is having our reunion "Lyme '26 Party" on April 23, 2005, at the Constant Spring Golf Club in Jamaica. If there is some way that you can, please post this on your website in the event that any of the alumni are in JA and are able to attend. The cost of the tickets are JA$1500 inclusive of food and drink, and starts at 9:00 p.m. Music is by Sparkles. I may be contacted at onepott@yahoo.com by any of the guys from the graduating class of 1980.
Thanks a lot.
