Italy defeated France 5-3 on penalty kicks in the final on July 9, 2006, after 120 minutes of play had produced a 1-1 draw.  This 4th World Cup win for Italy placed them 2nd all-time behind Brazil and ended France's unbroken 2-year winning streak.  Germany defeated Portugal 3-1 to take 3rd place.

Zinedine Zidane, captain of the French team, was named the 2006 World Cup's outstanding player despite being sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi of Italy in the final.  Ronaldo became the highest goal scorer in World Cup history, with 15 goals in 4 World Cups.

Brazil had come to World Cup 2006 as defending champions and the top ranked team in the world, and was knocked out 1-0 by eighth-ranked France in the Quarter Finals.  Host nation Germany, ranked 19th and the only country to have reached as many World Cup finals as Brazil, was knocked out 2-0 by thirteenth-ranked Italy in the Semifinals.
